Objectives of the course
The course is devoted to give an overview to rock mechanics and rock engineering principles, with reference to recent applications of civil and environmental engineering (tunnels, foundations, slope stability). The Rock Mechanics I course will focus on the geotechnical characterisation of the intact rock and the rock mass, including rock mass classification, giving the appropriate basis for the design analysis stage. Rock engineering design tools will be introduced with reference to tunnels and slope stability applications.
Expected skills
At the end of the course the student should be able to perform a complete geotechnical characterisation of a rock mass and determine relevant parameters useful at the design analysis stage.
Prerequisites
It is considered advisable the knowledge of the contents of Structural Mechanics and Geotechnics I.
Syllabus
The course will focus on:
- Rock mass description,
- Investigation methods for rock mass,
- Laboratory test on intact rock specimens,
- Laboratory tests on discontinuities,
- Static and dynamic in situ tests,
- Classification systems for the rock mass,
- Rock mass constitutive behaviour,
- Design analysis methods,
- Tunnels.
Laboratories and/or exercises
During design work laboratories, students will be asked to produce a report on the geotechnical characterisation of a rock mass with reference to a specific case study.
This will include:
- Graphical representation of discontinuities,
- Analysis of geomechanical and structural mapping of the rock mass,
- Laboratory test interpretation: determination of stiffness and strength characteristics of the intact rock,
- Laboratory tests on discontinuities: determination of strength charateristics of the discontinuities,
- Rock mass classification and determination of stiffness and strength properties for the rock mass,
- Preliminary design of a tunnel with reference to the specific case study.

Revisions / Exam
Examination will consist in a written and oral test.
