Objectives of the course
Fully understand the core tolerancing principles and functionally apply them in the field of the modern systems for the production of mechanical components and assemblies.
Expected skills
The students will be expected to be able to rightly dimensioning and GD&T tolerancing mechanical components and assemblies, to compute any functional distance on wichever assembly or component, to know the new Geometrical Product Specification language of the ISO/TC 213.
Technical communication methods, Probability and Statistics, Mechanical Drawing, Applied Mechanics and Machines, Quality and Metrology, Manufacturing technology.
Dimensions: customer sensitive, customer robust, non-system related. ASME GD&T a deep analysis on geometrical tolerances. Functional distances in components and in assemblies. Masterizing the tolerance optimization process. Case study: gear box reductor.
The GPS language. Fundamental, Global, Complementary and General Standards. A taxonomy. The basic tenets of GPS. Operators and Operations. The extended uncertainty.
Laboratories and/or exercises
The laboratory and the in-class practice are organized in a parallel manner. In-class: GD&T applications and calculations on the gear box reductor (components and assembly). Laboratory: solid modeling of the gear box reductor and motion simulations.

Individual, aided study and post inventory in class and laboratory.
The examination consists in a written proof on the functional GD&T dimensioning of a mechanical component and computing functional distances on components and assemblies. Oral discussion on the written proof and on the whole program of the course.
