Objectives of the course
The course aims to qualify students in order to become good at using commercial software for fluid dynamics analyzing of solid containing or surrounded by fluids. The course provides a theoretical part regarding the conservation equations' solutions through numerical techniques and practices through which students can become familiar to use one of the more up to date tools for analysis and design.
Expected skills
At the end of the course students will become familiar with the use of CFD codes and will be able to solve fluid dynamics problems even for very geometrically complex systems.
Basic knowledge about thermodynamics and heat transfer.
The student must own appropriate knowledge in calculus, algebra and geometry.
Calls on conservation law of mass, momentum and energy to an open system and their solution with numerical techniques.
Calls on the transmission of heat through the solid parts and natural and forced convective motion.
Simple solution to problems using spreadsheets designed to compare the performance of various analytical techniques.
Introduction to the use and application of commercial CFD codes in the solution of complex fluid dynamics problems.
Laboratories and/or exercises
Application of commercial CFD codes in solving common fluid dynamics problems.
Development of an algorithm in MatLabŪ to solve a problem of conduction in a solid through discretization techniques of finite differences (FDM), finite element (FEM) and finite volume methods (FVM).
Any text of numerical fluid dynamics.
Revisions / Exam
The exam consists on a practical test, in the laboratory on a PC, followed by an oral test. In order to pass the exam, students must demonstrate to understand what are the most critical aspects in solving a problem through CFD codes and how to obtain correct engineering solutions with minimal use of computational resources.
