Objectives of the course
The course 'Industrial Automation: Simulation and Control' provides the student with basics of production planning and flexible manufacturing systems (flow shop, job shop, etc.) The student will acquire notions of optimization of production systems, with a focus on software simulation and performance control.
Expected skills
The student will acquire (i) abilities to model and represent the production flow of complex and interconnected systems (flow-shop, job-shop, networked resources); (ii) the techniques and the numerical algorithms for analytic evaluation of production system performance (analysis of the production flows, location of bottlenecks, resource loading factors, etc.); (iii) the techniques and software instruments for the simulation of the production processes and for the numerical estimation of their performances.

Industrial Automation: Models.
Syllabus
- Performance measures for manufacturing systems
- Job sequencing and scheduling
- Inter-connected resources, flow shop, job shop
- Mean value analysis
- Non-Markovian queueing networks: computer simulation, optimization and control
- Software for discrete-event and production systems simulation and control
- Analysis of real-world case studies
Laboratories and/or exercises
The course includes intense practise sessions and computer simulation activities.
