Objectives of the course
This course focuses on advanced materials and technologies of relevant interest for engineering. The aim of this course is to give students advanced knowledge and skills to make them able to operate an accurate choice among the most advanced materials and technologies nowadays available, i.e. composite materials, joining and coating, etc..
Expected skills
It should provide engineers advanced skills for the choice of new materials (e.g. composite materials), coatings and joining technologies.
Materials for Engineering course

Topics include: An introduction to glasses and ceramics: theory, properties and applications. An introduction to composite materials and their applications: polymer matrix composites, metal matrix composites, ceramic matrix composites. Particle reinforced composites. Fiber reinforced composites. Fiber Reinforced Polymers (FRP) and their applications in Mechanical Engineering.
Wear resistant materials, coatings, cutting tools.
Laser (introduction ) and applications in Engineering. Laser cutting.
Optical fibres (introduction ), fiber based sensors and applications in Engineering
Diffusion laws and their applications in materials science and technology
Joining of materials: processes, characterizations, problems and applications
Coating of materials: wear-, corrosion-resistant coatings, theory, properties and applications in Engineering.
Super-alloys and Thermal protection systems.
Memory shape alloys: theory, properties and applications.
Foam-based materials: polymer-, metal-, ceramic- and glass-foams. Properties and applications.

Guided visits to research centres and companies as well as seminars given by experts in the field are part of the course.
Laboratories and/or exercises
A fully equipped experimental laboratory is a available for students willing to be tutored in experimental activity on materials properties. Attendance certificate will be provided at the end of the laboratory activity (facultative).

Students notes: ppt presentations given at the beginning of the course are not considered enough to pass the exam.
Revisions / Exam
The exams is based on three oral questions. A facultative short PowerPoint presentation on one topic to be agreed with the lecturer can be evaluated as a part of the exam (replace one question).
Alternatively a facultative experimental project on one topic to be agreed with the lecturer can be evaluated as a part of the exam (replace two questions).
