Objectives of the course
The course aims to illustrate the main issues which require non destructive checks testing industrial products and processes, to provide an overview of the current state of the art and to the foundations of physics on which the various techniques of non-destructive are based.
Expected skills
The course is the goal of putting students in a position to assess what are the best techniques applicable to various industrial problems with a dell professional 'user of non-destructive inspection;
solve some basic problems in each type of non-destructive as the basis for a possible deepening in one of them with a dell professional 'control experienced non-destructive
Prerequisites
Some basic knowledge of the courses of Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and basic laboratories of the biennium. It 'also requested an elementary knowledge of the use of the "MS-Excel" data base.
Syllabus
Course Introduction: destructive and non destructive checks, random checks. The main non-destructive control techniques: X-rays, cold neutron, ultrasound, subatomic particles.
X-rays: hints on the production and X-ray detection. Fields of industrial application of X-ray control. Property used: mitigation, absorption, differential absorption. The problem of the statistical data radiography. Practice.
Cold neutrons: hints on the production and detection of cold neutrons. Guides for cold neutrons. Fields of industrial application of cold neutrons control. Property used: low-angle scattering and multiple scattering (hints of theory and reading datas techniques). Practice.
Ultrasound: hints on the production and ultrasound detection, undulatory properties of ultrasound, ultrasound velocity. Parameters ultrasonic wave, reflection and refraction, dispersion and absorption. Fields of medical and industrial application. Practice. Subatomic particles: hints on the production and detection of subatomic particles (alpha, protons, electrons) and on nuclear origin photons (gamma). Properties of charged particles, passage through the material, collisions between particles and between photons and electrons (Compton). back-scattering technique. Ex-organic materials dating.
Laboratories and/or exercises
Are there attendant practice at the end of each topic.
Bibliography
The course follows the discussion held in instalments provided by the professor.
Other specialized bibliography to be consulted on individual subjects is available in the library, suggested by the professor during the course.

Revisions / Exam
The exam consists on a test in which is required the solution of some exercises according to concepts that students have developed during the lesson.
The exam consists on a written test with the possibility to consult instalments and notes, as well as nuclear parameters and ultrasonic tables. During the exam each student has a his disposion a computer with Windows installed.
Usually the test is only written unless specific requests for oral performance by the students.
