Objectives of the course
The course intends to provide the instruments useful to carry out a systemic analysis of servosystems used for industrial automation. Methodological aspects of the design are described. The choice of a servosystem considering its components (regulation, interface, actuators, transducers) and various possible actuation techniques: electric, pneumatic, hydraulic. Construction aspect will be emphasised.
Some indication will be given about performance obtainable with fluid power servosystems, applied in typical action such as position, velocity, speed, force, torque and pressure control. Performance of proportional continuous and digital pneumatic components are described.

Regulation of mechanical systems, Mechatronics
Definition of mechatronic servosystem. Components of a mechatronic servosystem. Comparison between different kind of actuation: electric, pneumatic, hydraulic. Design requirements and functional properties.
Fluid power serviosystems. Interface devices: continuous and digital valves. Pressure and flow proportional servovalves. Modulating digital valves. Construction typology. Properties: functional, environmental, electrical, size, protection. Static and dynamic characteristics. Actuation devices. Layout of fluid power servosystems. Position and velocity control: open loop and closed loop systems.
Analysis of servosystem used in test rigs, in road and railway vehicle and in industrial application. Simulation of fluid power servosystems. Non linear and linearised modelling. Simulation environments.
Laboratories and/or exercises
They are forecast laboratory exercises on different test rigs for servosystems as well as simulation exercises in computer lab. Students are divided up in groups, each of them will develop all the practical and simulation exercises. For the final exam, each couple of students will prepare a presentation about the developed activity describing the targets, the methods, the main properties of the used components as well as results obtained in experimentation and simulation with a comparison between numerical and experimental results.

The exam is oral and it considers the programs of classes and exercises. The presentation and discussion of the results obtained in the exercises will be evaluated.
