Politecnico di Torino
Academic Year 2009/10
01FPSEH Advanced Statistics

1st degree and Bachelorlevel of the Bologna process in Territorial, Urban And Environmental Planning Torino

Objectives of the course
The purpose of this course is to provide to students the basic knowledge and tools to make a inferential statistical survey and to understand the results of such a research. This is a basic course of statistics, which provides specific instruments useful to analyze urban and terrirorial contexts, which is positioned in the second year of degree because a preliminary course of calculus is required to better understand the mathematical objects presented along the lectures.

Expected skills
The knowledge obtained through this course consist on the statistical objects and tools commonly used to summarize the information coming up from the data collected after that a statistical survey is performed. Inferential techniques and procedures that allow extrapolation of information useful in planning problems are also presented and discussed, so that at the end of the lectures the student will be able to understand the meaning of the indices and parameters calculated by any statistical software, to understand which of them are more interesting in the analysis he has to perform, and to better planning urban and territorial acts.

Prerequisites
A basic knowledge of mathematical calculus is the rerequisite for this course. Also, since some of the lectures will take place in computer laboratories, a basic skill on use of personal computer is required.
