Objectives of the course
It provides the fundamentals of information theory and signal processing as far as compression is concerned. Moreover, it teaches how these tools are applied in the most popular lossless and lossy compression techniques, with application to data, images, video sequences, including ISO and ITU international standards.
Syllabus
LOSSLESS COMPRESSION
- theoretical foundations
- linear prediction
- entropy coding: Huffman codes, Rice codes, arithmetic coding, dictionary coding, run-length coding
- Lossless compression standards: JPEG-LS, CCSDS-Rice

LOSSY COMPRESSION
- Rate-distortion theory
- Basic and advanced quantization
- Predictive coding: DPCM and adaptive DPCM
- Speech coding
- Transform coding: Karhunen-Loeve transform, discrete cosine transform, wavelets and subband coding

MULTIDIMENSIONAL SIGNAL COMPRESSION
- Image coding standards (JPEG and JPEG 2000)
- Transform-based and motion-compensated video coding
- International video coding standards (MPEG, H.263, H.264/AVC)
Laboratories and/or exercises
About 20 hours will be spent in computer-based labs, where mostof the theoretical notions will be put in practice.
