Objectives of the course
The equilibrium distributions of bosons and fermions are derived and discussed in view of their applications to the theory of black body radiation and of some thermodynamical properties of solids and liquids.

Prerequisites
General Physics, Basic Principles of Quantum Mechanics.

Syllabus
The course includes the following sections: 1) Classical Thermodynamics, 2) Statistical definition of Temperature; 3) Bose Einstein and Fermi Dirac Statistics; 4) Quantization of the electromagnetic field: photons and black body radiation; 5) Quantization of the displacement field in crystals: phonons and specific heats, thermal expansion; 6) Theory of an ideal gas: translational, rotational and vibrational contributions to the internal energy; 7) Bose condensation in liquid helium; 8) Fermi level and electronic specific heat of metals.

Bibliography
No textbook is necessary: the students are invited to study their handwritten notes.
