Objectives of the course
On the basis of the energy systems knowledge, the student studies the operation of the main machines and systems for energy production and conversion in industry and services, acquiring detailed concepts about the construction, the regulation and the applications.
Expected skills
At the end of corse, the student has a global vision of the plant and the energy systems where operate the studied machineries and has learned to correlate the operating parameters and diagrams with the construction aspects and the requirements coming from the analysed applications.
Syllabus
Lessons
Steam turbines
- axial action and reaction turbine; multistage turbines
- regulation of steam turbines
- seals and condensers
Gas compressors
- regulation of turbocompressors; installation problems
- regulation of reciprocating and rotating volumetric compressors
Gas turbines
- simple and complex thermodynamical cycles
- temperature and pressure effects on open and closed, simple and complex cycles (regenerative, with intercooler, with repeated combustion)
- machine architecture, materials requirements, mechanical layout
- regulation
- combustion and air/fuel ratio
- aeronautical applications of gas turbines, turbojet and turbofan
Hydraulic machines
- overview, detailed description of the main types of hydraulic turbines and their performances
- regulation of hydraulic turbines
- regulation of turbopumps
Exercitations
The exercitations are finalised to a close examination of the following items.
Combined cycle power plants
- basic concepts about combined cycles
- coupling of the gas and the steam cycles
- heat recovery steam generator (HRSG): structure and comparison with conventional steam boilers
- calculation of the heat recovery steam generator
- heat recovery steam generators (HRSG) with two and three pressure levels
- supplementary firing in the heat recovery steam generators
- plant architecture; electrical and mechanical layout
- Main elements about pollutant emissions of the gas turbines
Cogeneration plants
- basic concepts about cogeneration; comparison with separate generation
- cogeneration plant types: operating parameters, regulation range and typical applications
- efficiencies and energy indexes of cogeneration plants
Laboratories and/or exercises
Laboratories are not provided.
During the course, some visits to hydroelectric and thermoelectric power stations
