Objectives of the course
This course gives the students basic knowledge of geology, lithology and geomorphology.
|
Expected skills
Reading and interpretation of geologic maps. Knowledge of the environment from a geologic and geomorphologic point of view. Realizing simple profiles.
|
Prerequisites
Basics of chemistry and physics.
|
Syllabus
. Introduction to the course.
. Structure of the Earth. Geothermal gradient. . Minerals: definition and classification. . Rocks: definition and classification, rock cycle. . Magmatic rocks: magma types, plutonic rocks, vulcanic and hypoabyssal rocks, vulcanic products (pyroclastic rocks, etc). . Sedimentary rocks: erosion, transportation and sedimentation; classification and sedimentation environments. . Earthquakes. . Volcanoes. . Earth's crust deformation: folds and faults. . Orogeny and plate tectonics. . Geomorphology: climate influence, erosion, environments. . Big risks: eruption, earthquake, landslide. |
Laboratories and/or exercises
Reading and interpretation of maps: official Italian cartography, technical regional maps, realization of maps and delimitation of catchment basins.
Reading and interpretation of geologic maps. Measurement of strata and realization of simple profiles. Some reports of practicals must be handed in at the final exam. One or more excursions to observe rocks and geologic/geomorphic structures will be arranged. |
