Objectives of the course
The course gives a coverage on the vast sector of optical fiber telecommunication systems.
Basic knowledge on Electromagnetic Theory, Electrical Communications and Digital transmissions.
The module is devoted to the following topics on fiber systems:
Introduction to optical network systems
Transmission techniques on optical fibers
Multiplexing techniques, TDM, WDM and OTDM
Optical components: fiber, LED, Laser, optical modulators, optical filters and multiplexers, optical amplifiers, optical receivers
Performance of optical transmission systems: non-amplified systems and optically amplified systems

Propagation effects on fiber: chromatic dispersion , PMD
International standards on optical systems: SONET/SDH, Fast and Gigabit Ethernet, optical access networks
The course also include 4-6 hours in the lab, where the students will have an overview of the typical instruments used in an optical laboratory (fiber splicers, optical spectrum analyzers, power meters, etc.)
no official textbooks, handouts are available to students.
