Objectives of the course
The course introduces to the fundamental laws of statistical thermodynamics, describes basic techniques for interacting systems and their application to problems from telecommunications and computer science.
Syllabus
Notion of quantum state and degeneracy.
Microcanonical ensemble: equal a priori probability, entropy.
Canonical ensemble: thermal equilibrium, temperature, Boltzmann distribution.
Entropy and information theory.
Techniques for interacting systems: mean field theory, Monte Carlo simulation, simulated annealing.
Applications: traveling salesman problem, graph bipartitioning, data clustering, image restoration, error correcting codes.
