Objectives of the course
This course addresses the fundamentals and applications of the most recent signal, image and video coding technologies. In particular, basic tools such as information theory and multidimensional transforms will first be addressed. Then, these concepts will be applied to modern signal, image and video compression standards such as MP3, JPEG, JPEG2000, MPEG-4 and H.264/AVC.
In most weeks, four hours will be devoted to computer simulations, using the MATLAB language and other software tools for image and video coding. For each computer lab, a brief report shall be prepared, which will be evaluated and will concur to determine the final grade.
Syllabus
1. Principles of transform coding (8 hours)
' Lossless and lossy compression
' Quantization
' Entropy encoding

2. Coding of still images (12 hours)
' 2D transforms: Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT), Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT)
' DCT-based encoding: JPEG
' DWT-based encoding: JPEG2000
' Audio coding: the MP3 standard

3. Video coding (12 hours)
' Basics of video processing
' Motion prediction/motion estimation
' Video coding standards: MPEG-1-2-4, H.261, H.263
' The H.264/AVC standard

4. Transmission of visual data in error prone environment (4 hours)
' Transmission of compressed data over unreliable links and/or erasure packet networks
' Error resilience and concealment tools for still images and video

Revisions / Exam
The examination will consist in a written exam with a few questions to be answered. The grade will be determined from the written exam and the evaluation of the reports of the computer labs.
