Objectives of the course
This course aims to introduce to students the fundamental elements of microcontrollers and the basic notions of microcontroller programming.
Expected skills
At the end of the course, students will know the basic architectures of microcontrollers along with their potentialities. Students will also learn how to program and employ PIC microcontrollers to interface digital systems with sensors and actuators.
Students should be familiar with the basic elements of digital electronics, digital system architectures and computer programming.
Introduction to microcontrollers. Basic Architecture of microcontrollers. Description of the devices usually embedded into microcontrollers. Detailed description of a PIC-family microcontroller with its embedded devices: general I/O ports, timers, analog to digital converters, synchronous asynchronous serial ports, capture and compare modules, PWM modulators. Device interfacing, polling and interrupt strategies.
Laboratories and/or exercises
Laboratory activities are focused to test the microcontroller devices through a series of exercises with increasing complexity. A system that monitors and controls the rotary speed of a small brushed electric DC motor will be developed during a final and more complex exercise.

Revisions / Exam
Examination is both written and oral. The former takes place in the laboratory and consists in the development of a program that solves a given problem. The developed program, along with the laboratory reports, will be discussed during the oral examination.
