Objectives of the course
Main objective is the development of the student's comprehension of those key elements and managerial decisions that contribute to determine a company's future success. The main focus of the course will be on innovation as a phenomenon per se, as a key component of a company's strategy, and as a core competence to be nurtured within the organization.
The corse is divided into two macro steps. In order to create an effective context for understanding innovation, the first part of the course will develop the key themes of strategic management: the relationship between environmental turbulence and the company's strategic posture, the key
analytical and strategic planning models, the key distinctions for choosing a competitive strategy and building the necessary capabilities to support the strategy. We will explore themes such as strategic positioning, strategy and organizational structure, competitive advantages, growth and diversification strategies.
The focus of the second part of the corse will be innovation: we will explore the key concepts and dynamics of innovation, the diverse innovation strategy models available, and the management of innovation as a key organizational process. In particular, we will explore the organizational and management aspects of the innovation process, the instruments and models for selecting innovation initiatives, the product development process and the key aspects of project management, the key elements that nurture and enhance a company's innovation culture, both at team and individual level.

Business cases will be often utilized as a means for group learning and class discussions.

4. Principal competitive strategy models: generic strategies (cost, differentiation, focus), vertical and horizontal integration, product/market diversification'
5. Core competencies in support of the company's strategies
6. Innovation: key concepts and role of innovation in a company's future
7. Dynamics of innovation: sources and patterns, technology and product life cycles, standard and dominant design'
8. Defining the innovation strategy: pioneers and followers, time of entry/exit, competition and cooperation
9. Selecting innovation projects: the key instruments
10. The product development process and the key elements of project management
11. Organization and innovation: culture, organizational structure and capabilities for nurturing an innovative organization
12. Managing innovation teams and freeing individual innovativeness: key models and instruments

Revisions / Exam
There will be one written final test and likely one team-based oral presentation.
