Objectives of the course
This course (1) focuses on decisions and decision processes in media firms, (2) provides an overview of the interactions among media industries within media industry system, and (3) analyses convergence and cross-media processes based, among others, on ICT innovations.
This course provides students the fundamental capabilities to analyze and understand (1) the competitive and institutional environments; (2) technological trends influencing products, processes, and business models; (3) media firms' resources and capabilities. Lessons are based on case study discussions.
Course content


Strategic management fundamentals
The positioning school and the Resource-based view; Competitive and institutional environment; Industry system and organizational field; The impact of ICT on product and process innovation.


1. The newspaper industry
From traditional newspaper to online newspaper: 'The Wall Street Journal' and 'The New York Times' cases.
2. The television industry
Cross-media strategy in the television industry: 'The Big Brother' case (A, B, and C).
3. The publishing industry
Cross-media strategy in the publishing industry: 'The Harry Potter' case.
4. The radio industry.
The podcasting effect.
5. The video game industry.
From traditional video games to (wired and wireless) online video games.
6. The motion picture industry.
Cross-media strategy in the motion picture industry: 'The Matrix' case.
