Objectives of the course
The course focuses on quality of service techniques to support heterogeneous traffic (voice, video, data) in telecommunication and computer networks. Particular attention is devoted to algorithms and to standardization issues.

Basic knowledge of telecommunication networks.
The course is devoted to the following topics:
Quality of service: standardization efforts
a. QoS in Frame Relay: congestion control and traffic shaping
b. QoS in ATM: (service classes: CBR, DBR, ABR, ABT, UBR)
c. QoS in Internet: Intserv and Diffserv. RSVP and MPLS
Algorithms to support QoS
a. CAC: Connection Admission Control
b. Shaping and policing: Leaky bucket and GCRA
c. Scheduling: FIFO, WRR, and WFQ
d. Congestion control
e. Dropping policies and AQM (Active Queue Management) techniques
Scheduling in input-queued switches and router. Unicast scheduling algorithms (PIM, iSLIP, 2DRR, MUCS, RPA). Multicast scheduling algorithms.
Multimedia traffic: RTP (Real Time Protocol)
Audio, video and voice coding techniques
The teacher will provide slides and support material.
