Objectives of the course
Optical fibers are today the main transmission medium used in telecommunication networks. Voice, video and data are very likely to traverse one or more fiber links in their path from the source to the destination. The course aims at describing the possibilities offered by optical technologies in telecommunication networks not only for transmission, but also for switching and control functions. Several network and protocol architectures specifically designed to take advantage of optical technologies will be described.
Prerequisites
Students must be familiar with computer and telecommunication networks, both circuit- and packet-switched.

' First-generation optical networks
' Broadcast-and-select WDM networks
' WDM ring networks
' Wavelength routing
' Optical access networks
' Optical packet switching
' Protocol architectures for optical networks
' Fault protection and restoration
