Objectives of the course
This class covers the fundamentals of broadband transmission over the optical fiber.
Syllabus
The class first gives a quick overview of the hardware involved in optical transmission systems, including the fiber itself, optical sources (LEDs, lasers), modulators, detectors and optical signal processing elements.
Then, it enables the students to carry out the basic analysis and design of optical links, from short haul access to ultra-long haul transcontinental, also taking into account linear and non-linear fiber propagation effects.
Finally, it gives an overview of the most widespread current standards, including SONET/SDH and 10 Gbit/s optical Ethernet.
