Objectives of the course
The course focuses on the technological issues of database management systems, also introducing current trends and most recent research results in the area. Laboratory activity is devoted to the evaluation of the technological features of the most popular commercial DBMSs.
The course covers the following topics:
Technology of a database server:
o concurrency control
o reliability control
o physical data structures
o query processing and optimization
o physical database design.
Active databases: definition of triggers in SQL-3.
Distributed architectures: client-server architectures, distributed database design, distributed concurrency and reliability control, replication management.
