Objectives of the course
Give the students knowledge on features, technical and historical development, characteristics and fuinctioning of motor vehicles. Application fields for different types of motor vehicles uesd for transport of passengers or wares, problems connected to their use, safety and environmental impact.
Expected skills
General knowledge of a "motor vehicle system", its application opportunities and conditions of use; to be able to evaluate needs, safety and ecology, in order to continue studying paying the right attention on different technical, industrial, trade, safety and ecology aspects.
Knowledge of mathematics, physics and chemistry studied at the high school are required.
After a first historical synthesis on starting and developing of motor vehicle industry, the course focuses on spreading of motor vehicles all around the world, on their socio-economical impact, on safety and environment related problems. Building and functioning of a motor vehicle and of an industrial motor vehicle are analyzed as well, and of their main components (body, chassis, motor power). Then some materials related to motor vehicles are used, the dynamic of a vehicle is studied as well as the production technologies. Innovations are outlined, referring to alternative tractions. In the final part of the course the technical evolution of a vehicle during the time is studied, from origins to nowadays, analizing technically the most importan motor vehicles on the international market.
Laboratories and/or exercises
Practicals are carried out in labs and Fiat centers and they include: analysis of different type of motor vehicles and of their main components; evaluation criteria of driving conditions and of the dynamic bahaviour of motor vehicles; post-selling care criteria. Some practicals at the company Fiat are arranged.

Practicals are carried out in groups of 10-30 students.

Professors are available to explain the students some topics of the program and of practicals, and to check, in an informal way, the learning of the students. Students are divided into two groups.
Lecture notes from lessons carried out in the classroom are made available in the form of a CD Rom. Also availble are recommended video tapes that are useful for the specific didactic purposes of the course.
Revisions / Exam
The exam consists of written tests.
