Obiettivi dell'insegnamento
The course is devoted to the analysis and design of interconnecting systems for the fast digital signals of electronic applications. Interconnecting systems on IC, PCB and cable scales are considered. The addressed issues include signal propagation effects taking place in interconnects, crosstalk, ground bounce, power distribution, timing and protocols. The course provides an understanding of basic signal integrity and EMC problems in the above mentioned context, and a detailed description of the techniques used to solve them.
Prerequisiti
Analog and digital electronic circuits and devices. Transmission lines.
Programma
Analysis and design of interconnecting systems for the transmission of information and electrical power distribution. Signaling techniques for Signal Integrity and EMC. The following topics are addressed:
' Layered model of communication systems
' Review of digital interfacing issues
' Transmission lines: models, parameters, simulation tools
' Crosstalk in multiple-conductor systems and in PCBs
' Interconnection structures: analysis, simulation and design
' Models for passive and active devices
' PCB stack-up and layout techniques
' Power/ground distribution
' Switching noise, distribution of bypass capacitors
' Clock distribution
' Transmission of signals and timing problems (skew)
' Basic cycle protocols, synchronization of operations
' Cycle optimization techniques
' Serial interconnections, coding and mo-demodulation
' Clock embedding and clock/data recovery
Laboratori e/o esercitazioni
The course includes laboratory exercises (4 hr/week), with mandatory written reports.
