Objectives of the course
The aim of the course is to expose students to emerging wireless technologies. After a description of UMTS networks, the course will focus on ad hoc and sensor networks, presenting the most popular protocols developed for such systems, as well as some theoretical and experimental results.
Prerequisites
Introduction to telecommunication networks, Mobile communication networks
Syllabus
- Introduction to wireless networks.
- Third Generation wireless networks, UMTS: Network architecture; Quality of service provisioning; Spread Spectrum and CDMA (main concepts); FDD and TDD access; Protocols; Logical, Traffic and Physical channels.
- Ad hoc networks: Generalities; Applications; Main issues; IEEE 802.11e WLANs; Analytical evaluation of the ad hoc network capacity.
- Mobile Ad hoc Networks (MANETs): Basic principles; Routing protocols; Mobile IP.
- Sensor networks: Main characteristics and applications; Protocols; Available technologies and experimental results.
- Bluetooth: Applications; Network architecture; Radio interface; Network formation; Traffic links and scheduling; Protocol stack.
