Aim of the course:
Environmental electromagnetic field in the frequency range up to 100 kHz can be generated by a wide variety of sources with different characteristics . The aim of the course is to provide a useful knowledge for the correct evaluation and measurements of the electric and magnetic fields. Besides fundamental theoretical aspects, the students will acquire some skills in rightly measuring and analysing field signals by an experimental training carried out at INRIM laboratories. Particular attention will be devoted to design of mitigation systems through the use of dedicated numerical codes, which will be illustrated and experienced during the course.
Course program:
PART ONE: theoretical aspects.

1. 1.1 Review of the electromagnetic laws and involved quantities, related to electromagnetic environmental fields
1.2 Overview of the used numerical methods
1.3 Outline of the new numerical approaches
2. Electromagnetic fields and Human Beings
2.1. Exposure reference levels and international guidelines
2.2. Evaluation of induced currents.

3. Electric and magnetic field sources and field emission levels
3.1. Domestic appliances
3.2. Generation, transmission and distribution systems
3.3. Industrial low and medium frequency sources
3.4. Other sources (some examples)
4. Measurements
4.1. Operation principles and calibration of the measuring instruments.
4.2. Measurement protocols according to technical standards and evaluation of the measurement uncertainty
5. Mitigation
5.1. Mitigation principles at low and medium frequency
5.2. Software packages for shielding design and evaluation

PART TWO: experimental activity

1. Sensors and transducers laboratory - Use of measuring instruments
1.1 Conventional meters and dosimeters (mappatura emdex)
