Obiettivi dell'insegnamento
The course consists of 8 lectures (each about 2 hours) on selected topics in photonics for optical communications. Most of the lectures will deal with semiconductor lasers and amplifiers which are key components in optical communications; the last two lectures will address related topics in nanophotonics. The level will correspond to that of the textbooks:
L.A. Coldren and S.W. Corzine, 'Diode lasers and integrated circuits', (Wiley and Sons).
J.D. Joannopulous, R.D. Meade, and J.N. Winn, 'Photonic crystals', (Princeton University Press).
Lecture 1: General introduction to semiconductor lasers and amplifiers. Simple laser
diode models. Application to various types of laser diodes.

Lecture 2: Light-matter interactions in semiconductors. From simple oscillator models to
semiconductor Maxwell-Block equations - and back again.

Lecture 3: Description and measurement of signal noise from semiconductor lasers.
Large- and small-signal models. Stability of modes.

Lecture 4: The external cavity laser as an illustrative example. Stability and noise
properties. Potential model for the external cavity laser. Nonlinear dynamics and the route to chaos.

Lecture 5: Noise properties of semiconductor optical amplifiers. Noise and systems
performance (methods for bit-error-rate calculation).

Lecture 6: Waves in periodic structures (photonic crystals, gratings). S- and T-matrix
methods. Application to grating based laser diodes.

Lecture 7: Photonic crystals. Manipulation of bandgaps for formation of optical micro-
cavities and waveguides.

Lecture 8: Controlling the rate of spontaneous emission and the speed of light in
semiconductor structures.
