Subject fundamentals
This multidisciplinary Laboratory is aimed at teaching the techniques and tools of visual representation. It presents and integrates the scientific approach to representation according to the principles of projective and descriptive geometry with techniques of manual and digital graphic-visual representation, typical of the designer’s activities, and those that specifically represent the real or potential artefact through real and virtual models.
The Laboratory proposes multiples techniques and tools to direct the student, through shared methodologies, towards a critical and appropriate culture for representing the artefacts of design. It is structured in frontal lessons and exercises within the following teachings: Basis and applications of descriptive geometry; Design for design (overall and detailed representation); Real and virtual representation (two- and three-dimensional). It lasts six months and is held in the 1st year, in the 1st teaching period.
Expected learning outcomes
The integrated skills that are to be provided are guided by a methodology of combined polytechnic, scientific and applicative representations. The students will be taught the capacity to choose representation methods (manual and digital techniques and tools) suitable to communicate, in the dimensional and contextual scale, the represented object and the specific phase of the design process in which we are operating. More specifically:
- knowledge of the visual perception and ability communication through graphic representation
- knowledge and ability to use various representation techniques and tools for design
- ability in freehand style survey, both with classic manual and digital design techniques
- ability in communicative organisation and management of two-dimensional representation (project tables)
- ability in communicative organisation and management of three-dimensional representation (model)
- ability to work in a team under the leadership of a multidisciplinary group of teachers
- ability to manage time and resources
- ability to present their work in public in Italian and English
Prerequisites / Assumed knowledge
Aptitude in manual design and visual perception; basic knowledge of geometric design, history of art, elements of visual communication; basic knowledge of computer tools; manual aptitude.
Contents
The Laboratory is interdisciplinary and integrates the contributions of the following disciplines:

BASIS AND APPLICATIONS OF DESCRIPTIVE GEOMETRY (6 CFU, 60 hours)
This provides scientific bases (theoretical and applicative) of the language of design intending Design and Geometry as a "vision and conception of the world" from the basic theoretical assumptions of the procedure: "subjectivity and objectivity of Representation), from the critical knowledge of the existence of the demonstration of the project, from ideation to execution, including the visual (and perceptive) characters as a parameter of the project. The main themes undertaken are: Principles of projective and descriptive geometry; Orthogonal projections; Axonometric projections; Perspective projections; Theory of shadows.

DESIGN FOR DESIGN (6 CFU, 60 hours)
Provides the cultural and technical tools for the representation/communication of the geometric, functional, expressive and technical characteristics of the product. It is divided into two parts. The first is dedicated to communicating the overall information of the product, in order to represent its nature, dimensions, usability and the expressivity through manual representation techniques. The second is dedicated to regulating and unifying the technical design and representing details of the product through manual and digital techniques.

REAL AND VIRTUAL REPRESENTATION (6 CFU, 60 hours)
Provides the cultural and technical tools to effectively manage the relationship between two- and three-dimensional, real and virtual communication. It is divided into Theory of models (types and communicative ends), Construction of the real model (materials and processes), Digital graphics for communication (Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator), Digital design for two-dimensional technical representation (Autodesk Autocad).
The student will be able to discuss, choose and use a variety of representation methods and techniques, from real models to digital design, so as to best represent the product in function of the communication directed at different subjects (client, producer, consumer) and with different objectives: from the communication of the concept to the inspection and control of the design, from the communication of the characteristics of use to the constructive ones, ending with promoting the product.
Delivery modes
The Laboratory is made up of three disciplines (6 CFU each) organised in lessons and brief exercises plus an in-depth contribution given by the macro Laboratory exercise, activated to do so transversally by the three disciplines and managed by "Design for design", as a fundamental discipline in training designers and coordinating teaching of the Laboratory.
Each discipline is organised in lessons and exercises and exams, such as revisions and discussions addressed to the classrooms (individually or group) of the exercises produced.
Texts, readings, handouts and other learning resources
Summary of the topics undertaken, copy of the slides and other material illustrated/used during the lessons (in paper and computer form), as well as documents used in the overall organisation of the teaching activities will be available on the teaching portal or supplied to the students directly in the classroom.

Assessment and grading criteria
Regular attendance to lessons is required, also for the final grade that will be given in a single exam mark. The activities carried out will undergo intermediary evaluations, both mono-disciplinary and in seminars covering all subjects. Said intermediary evaluations will go towards the final grade, based on the presentation and discussion of final examination papers (written and graphic). Laboratory activities are carried out by students individually or in groups depending on the discipline; each student will be given an individual result (expressed with a single grade), which will take into consideration the intermediary mono-disciplinary and seminar evaluations (written, oral, graphic), the evaluation of the presentation and discussion of the final examination papers and individual participation in the task and the group presentation.
