1st degree and Bachelor-level of the Bologna process in Design And Visual Communication - Torino
The laboratory is multidisciplinary, including contributions from various integrated technical-cultural ambits that aim to teach the problems linked to the design of products of controlled complexity.
The laboratory, in fact, proposes the HOW TO DO IT design experience to modify and promote the existing one: starting from a given ambit and a specific function, the goal is to search for an added cultural value in the product design that is associated with the breadth and precision of the services offered, paying particular attention to the choice of materials and technologies to be used.
The design follows a performance and deductive methodology according to which a product is the implementation of a course that considers the needs, prerequisites, services required, measure of the services offered and services provided as parameters of evaluation.
The three courses will converge at times for shared exercises.
The course lasts for six months and is held in the 1st year, 2nd teaching period.
Expected learning outcomes
We aim to teach how to transmit comprehension of the design process on the product scale.
Identifying such a laboratory-formed figure as the skilled designer, we highlight the skills he must acquire in order to resolve a wide range of problems in design and process aimed at defining a suitable and expressive product, through the knowledge and skills listed below:
- Knowledge of the product’s field of culture, its methodologies and the design phases
- Knowledge of materials
- Knowledge of methodology for developing visual communication systems.
- Ability to make decisions in the awareness of one’s own role and responsibilities,
- Ability to collect, analyse and interpret information from the context elaborating it independently; - Good time and resource management skills,
- Ability to reflect on the ethical, social, cultural themes linked to it;
- Ability to interact with the various cultures and disciplinary and professional areas that design connects;
- Ability to work in mono- and multi-disciplinary teams;
- Ability to present their own work in public in Italian and English;
- An interest in innovation and the multidisciplinary aspects and a continual search to learn more in general

Prerequisites / Assumed knowledge
Established and certified knowledge in the field of 2D representation tools and techniques; knowledge of the history of architecture, design, visual communication.
In the Concept Design interdisciplinary Laboratory, the students learn to control and manage the complexity of the design question of "How do I do this?" which, from year to year, can be applied to exercises on different themes, including those resulting from collaborations with external organisations and realities.
Regular attendance is required. The laboratory is carried out in groups (maximum 3-4 per group), working to elaborate new products rich in cultural, expressive and sustainable contents from the technical and productive point of view.
The laboratory is interdisciplinary.
The disciplinary contributions are finalised thus:
DESIGN 1 (6 CFU, 60 hours)
The course is dedicated to configuring the general problems afferent to the design project, with product and communication skills, and the application of design methodology in developing a product that is culturally, expressively and technologically sustainable.
The student deals with the specific culture of the proposed theme identifying the problems, defining their requisites and the services required and identifying their user; he will then deal with the development of the idea behind the project (concept) through subsequent phases to define the product’s characteristics.
TECHNOLOGICAL CULTURE OF DESIGN (6 CFU, 60 hours)
The course highlights the technological aspects of the project and aims to provide a knowledge of the methods and tools necessary to comprehend the feasibility of the objects used and the relationships between the cultural, environmental and productive contexts.
The first part of the course is organised in theory lessons (technology, technological innovation, industrialisation, culture, project, system analysis, demand-service-birth and evolution-environmental theory) useful in setting up the general problems behind the project.
The second part will accompany the student in acquiring coded knowledge (theoretical lessons) and applying the information to the design theme of the Laboratory of Concept Design.
Knowledge of the Technological Culture of Design is integrated with reading material recommended by the teachers.
DESIGN MATERIALS AND TECHNOLOGIES (6 CFU, 60 hours)
The Design Materials and Technologies course provides the technical-scientific tools that broaden the designer’s cultural bases allowing him to expertly manage the technical functions of the materials used and the potential of the transformation technology and put them at the service of the students’ creativity.
The course will consist of six training credits divided into two parts:
- 4 CFU on the Technology of Materials with reference to simple materials (metallic, ceramic and polymeric). This part introduces the designer to the main properties and the relationship between the material and performance (both technological and aesthetic).
In particular, the discussions carried out regard the following:
- The elements that make up a material: reference to the chemical elements and the bonds that keep them in a solid state. Strong bonds (metallic, covalent/ionic) and weak bonds. Mechanical properties of materials. The principle of action and reaction: the concept of elastic deformation under pressure. Introduction to Condon-Morse curves. Rigidity and thermal expansion. Crystalline solids and amorphous solids: the 3D organisation of matter. Isotropy and anisotropy. Introduction to crystalline materials. Main defects of solid state materials; interstitial and constitutional solid solutions; the diffusion in the solid state; the line defects; dislocation and plastic deformation. The grain boundaries in polycrystalline solids. 3D defects: porosity (12h)
- Materials properties: physical and chemical properties. Mechanical properties: pressure and deformation; elastic deformation; elastic module; plastic deformation. Hardness. Examples of exercises concerning mechanical properties. Thermal properties of materials: specific heat; conductibility and thermal diffusivity; thermal expansion; melting temperature; an example: resistance to thermal shock. The importance of thermal expansion for materials. Examples of exercises on thermal properties (8h)
- Ceramic materials: traditional glass and ceramics. Structure, constituents. Industrial methods of glass production: drawn glass, float glass. Raw materials for ceramics: types, functions and selection. Processing technologies of ceramic materials. Classification of ceramic materials and types (6h).
- Introduction to polymers. Polymers obtained by addition and condensation reactions. Thermoplastic and thermoset polymers: definition, properties and types. Production techniques and examples of polymeric materials. Properties of polymer materials: physical and mechanical properties (6h).
- Techniques for processing metals. Shaping techniques. Casting and main processes for hot- and cold-shaping: lamination, forging, extrusion, drawing, wiredrawing. Joining elements: welding, riveting, bolting, gluing. Iron and its alloys. Classification and properties. The process of steel production (6h).
- Wood and its properties. Types of manufacturing procedures in wood (2h).
- Two CFU will be devoted to specific materials and simple processes as support to the overall design activity within the Laboratory in synergy with the other contributions coming from the parallel modules
The Laboratory’s activities, which will be proposed by the main teachers of the various contributions, will be undertaken in different ways and include lessons and disciplinary activities (4CFU) and deep study, analysis, planning and inspection activities carried out in class regarding the design exercise of the laboratory with the teachers (2 CFU).

Assessment and grading criteria
Regular attendance is required, also for the final grade that will be given in a single exam mark. The activities carried out will undergo intermediary evaluations, both mono-disciplinary and in seminars covering all subjects. Said intermediary evaluations will go towards the final grade, based on the presentation and discussion of final examination papers (written and graphic). Laboratory activities are carried out by students in groups, but each student will be given an individual result (expressed with a single grade), which will take into consideration the intermediary mono-disciplinary and seminar evaluations (written, oral, graphic), the evaluation of the presentation and discussion of the final examination papers and individual participation in the task and the presentation.
For the four CFU of the Materials and Technologies for Design course there will be a written exam, and in the case of the Design1 and Technological Culture of the Planning courses there will be tests and exercises on the various subjects.
In the final laboratory exam the student obtain an individual evaluation of sufficient in the three disciplines.
