Subject fundamentals
The fundamental elements of soil mechanics and of the interaction between soils and geotechnical structures are given. Special attention is devoted to the study of earth retaining systems.
Expected learning outcomes
Through a series of exercises and case studies the student should learn how to take into account the influence of soil behaviour on the stability of structures

The geotechnical project
Classification of soils
Continuum mechanics ad constitutive laws
Groundwater, permeability and seepage
Effective stresses, normal- and over- consolidation conditions
Rock mass, coarse and fine soil deformability and strength
Drained and undrained condition
Earth retaining systems
Delivery modes
Homework and class exercises are envisaged in order to check the student process of learning.
