Subject fundamentals
System level knowledge of in-vehicle information systems, and of standards and applicability of wireless communication systems. Understanding of geo-localization systems and their performance. Basic knowledge of traffic control systems.
Expected learning outcomes
Understanding of signal spectral analysis, of lossy and lossless compression techniques. Knowledge of analogue and digital transmission schemes for wired and wireless applications. Basic knowledge of packet data networks.
Understanding of wireless communication systems (WLAN, Bluetooth, Wireless USB) and their applicability in vehicles.
Understanding of geo-localization systems (GPS, GALILEO) and their performance.
Prerequisites / Assumed knowledge
Knowledge of computer networks and in-vehicle wired networks (provided in Electric and electronic systems in vehicles), probability theory (random variables, probability density function, cumulative distribution function, central limit theorem) and Fourier series.
Contents
Characterization of the electrical signal: deterministic signals and stochastic processes, time and frequency domain representation of signals, stationary and ergodic processes, Fourier transform, Wiener-Khintchine theorem, power spectral density (spectrum) of a signal, identification of periodic components in a spectrum.
Information transmission techniques: baseband and bandpass transmissions, band translation, digital baseband transmissions (NRZ, RZ, Manchester coding), analogue and digital modulations (AM, FM, PSK, QPSK, QAM).
Vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) communications: standards and rules, toll systems (Telepass and ETSI compliant systems), IEEE 802.11 wireless systems and their application to V2I communication.
Vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communication: standards and rules, IEEE 802.11 wireless systems and their application to V2V communication.
Interconnection of portable devices to vehicle: Bluetooth, USB, Wireless USB.
Geo-localization (GPS, GALILEO): principles of operation, performance, applications in vehicles.
Driving aids: infrared vision systems, anti collision radar, proximity sensors.
Infomobility systems: structure, objectives, examples.
