Subject fundamentals
Every anthropic action determines on the surrounding environment changes and effects that can result in impacts of varying amount: the safety of land and environment is therefore an aspect always present in work practice that an engineer and an architect will perform, whether in industrial, energy, construction site, management or research sectors.
The expert must handle knowledge and competence to prevent negative impacts which can affect or compromise the quality of the environment and the surroundings of work activities. To achieve the assessment of environmental dynamics, he will need to gets the skills to identify the 'photograph' of reality and knowing how to insert the phenomenon in the context which this occurs, by keeping in mind the two general objectives under any environmental strategy: improve critical conditions and preserve the quality where present.
The know-how to evaluate and measure phenomena represents a great tool for managing conditions of pollution and / or environmental quality, by identifying the connection between the source of the risk factor and the potential receptor of the damage. In this course the physical and chemical dynamics of generation, propagation, reception and management of the main environmental pollutants arising from the exceeding of limit values during the regular execution of activities, will be examined. The need to know threshold values and normative limits requires a multidisciplinary study of damage scenarios and local regulations: both for various environmental compartments and for a proper land management, each part will be referred to the regional and national laws or even more to the European directives, recommendations and guidelines, each time recalled and examined.
Expected learning outcomes
The course has the intent to convey to the student the knowledge on methods of analysis and study of the state and the safety conditions of a territory, intended as a set of natural and anthropic components containing emissive sources potentially polluting. The course, moreover, wants to offer methodological and interpretative instruments for phenomena and for the complex environmental system analysis.
Regarding the acquired skills, the aim of the course is to make the student in the conditions to know how set independently a general scheme for assessment and measurement of a given environmental issue, including the relative normative framing.
Prerequisites / Assumed knowledge
Knowledge on physics, chemistry and mathematics, acquired in the basic courses of the degree.
' Life environment: description of the main parameters describing life environments, in relationship with working environments.
' Anthroposphere and natural environment: environmental conditions (otpimal, average and negative) and system response (quality, responsibility and damage)
' The territory: social and economical scenarios; urban, sub-urban and rural scenarios; territory management and main legislative references.
' Territorial framework and geo-reference.
' Information management: data, simple and aggregate indicators and indexes: the DPSIR model; European and worldwide references.
' Risk analysis criteria applied to a territorial scenario: risk and risk sources identification; description of the state condition and definition of potential impacts based on cause-effect correlation dynamics.
' Emissions and immissions: air-pollution sources and effects on the surrounding territory; main legislation references.
' Environmental risks forecast and management instruments: recalls of the European preventive evaluations as VIA, VAS, Incidence Report, IPPC.
' The meaning of Environmental Impact Assessment in relation with sustainability, compatibility or territorial damage.
' Receptors assessment: involved populations characterization; active involvement and penetration modalities; effects dynamics and damage categories (annoyance, disturbance and damage); recalls about current legislation.
' Chronic risks identification and description criteria, or continuous limits overcoming over time, or during standard potential source operations.
' Identification of assessment methodologies for pollutant coming from industrial processes and anthropic activities at local or regional level and for immediate or delayed phenomena; legislation reference analysis.
' Description and application of specific assessment techniques for each risk factor; legislation reference analysis.
' Quantification and qualification of risk factors: quantification of exposure (guide, warning, action and quality values); qualification of risk factors; legislation reference analysis.
' The 'time' parameter: exposure, observation (phenomenon under evaluation), reference and measurement time; legislation reference analysis.
' Cumulative impacts; synergy of multiple risk factors.
' The boundary conditions assessment: meteo-climatic parameters and environmental conditions.
Delivery modes
In the first part of the course will be performed lessons finalized to the competence harmonization for students coming from different formative paths and educational fields.
On the different parts of the programme will be done some class and lab exercitations in order to reinforce what analyzed in the theoretical lessons. International databases, environmental managing instruments and risk factor assessment instruments (i.e. noise, airborne particulate) will be examined in lab by the students.
A final paper made by students in groups will be the application of the theoretical knowledge acquires by each component of the group during the course. This report will be focused on arguments which keep in mind the specific skills and objectives of the students which are coming from different degree courses.
This project could be subject to inspections in the examined area.

Notes and documents about topics discussed in the lessons will be made available on "Portale della didattica".The legislation will be available through the European, national and regional government official sites.
Assessment and grading criteria
Oral exam about the topics treated in the lessons, with discussion of the final report.
In order to pass the exam, the student has to reach a sufficient mark both on oral exam and final report.
