Subject fundamentals
The course provides knowledge concerning the management of plant logistics and methodologies of programming and production management, also in relation to market demand and supply problems. Moreover, maintenance strategies and innovative approaches to production (lean manufacturing, WCM - World Class Manufacturing, etc ...) will be presented.
Expected learning outcomes
Knowledge of issues relating to the management of cargo handling inbound and outbound industrial plants;
Knowledge of methods of assessment of market demand and supply needs of an industry;
Knowledge of manufacturing strategies and methodologies of production programming and management of an industrial plant;
Knowledge of the techniques of handling materials;
Knowledge of maintenance strategies and innovative approaches to production (lean manufacturing, WCM - World Class Manufacturing).
Ability to manage complex production lines;
Ability to plan production, using appropriate tools and making: sales forecasting and order management, preparation of production plans at different hierarchical levels (MPS - master production schedule, operational plans, FAS - Final Assembly Schedule) taking account of capacity and other constraints, material supply plans (MRP - Material Requirements Planning) and control (MPCS);
Ability to manage material handling and storage of high internal complexity;
Ability to apply the methods of lean manufacturing and WCM (World Class Manufacturing) to improve business performance.
Prerequisites / Assumed knowledge
Basic knowledge of technology
Basic knowledge about the problems of industrial plants
Technical knowledge of logistics and supply chain management.
Contents
The notion of logistics and its evolution
Review of fundamentals of Statistics
Demand forecasting: the notion and main methods
Inventory management: ABC analysis, the Economic Order Quantity (EOQ) model and its extensions, Periodic Review models
Push and pull systems
Material Requirement Planning (MRP) and scheduling.
Just in Time (JIT), Lean manufacturing/logistics and Kanban systems.
The notion of WCM.
Maintenance of industrial plants.
Project management.
Project and supply chain risk management.
Logistics performance measurement, with particular attention to the indicators assessing warehousing systems
Storage systems: storage policies, warehouse material handling systems, automated systems supporting storage and distribution.
Automated storage and retrieval systems.
Material handling equipment.
FEM models.
Picking systems.
Packaging: primary, secondary, and tertiary packaging, environmental constraints, defining the package according to the product and its market.
Product traceability: product traceability systems, barcodes, OCR codes, RFID, speech recognition.
Delivery modes
During practical classes students will apply the notions acquired during lectures.

Lecture notes provided by the instructors. Further readings might be recommended during classes
Assessment and grading criteria
The final grade will be determined based on a written test including exercises, an oral test, and on reports developed during the course.
