Subject fundamentals
The purpose of this class is to give to the students an overview of the main technological processes for the transformation of the materials, operated with the aim of giving them the micro and macro geometrical features and micro and macrostructural characteristics to make them suitable for the fabrication of biomedical devices.
Therefore, the described processes are: forming, advanced casting technologies, material removal processes, non-conventional processes, the main microfabrication technologies, putting them in relationship with the product specifications, in terms of costs and performance.
Expected learning outcomes
The knowledge of the main fabrication processes is necessary to allow the students to choose the technologies, evaluate the production means, also cooperating to their design, and to elaborate the fabrication cycles of the single components, made in the various existing engineering materials.

At the end of the class, the student will:
- know and be able to apply the relationships between materials and fabrication processes;
- know and be able to apply the main fabrication techniques;
- know and be able to apply the fundamental process parameters and their interaction with the component requisites (quality, tolerances, surface finish etc.);
- know and be able to apply the necessary actions to minimize the product costs;
As far as the autonomy of the student is concerned, he/she will be required to evaluate the manufacturing problem, finding a viable solution in reasonable time, knowing the interactions among the different factors of the production process, and the capability of estimating the order of magnitude of the variables.
As far as the communication skills are concerned, the student will be required to:
- know how to write technical reports with an elevated level of professionalism
- know how to present orally technical problems related to a production process.

The learning capability will be stimulated through the integration of different teaching tool, such as slide, textbooks, projection of videos, integrated by the comments and oral presentations of the teacher. Further, the students will be stimulated to carry out further in-depth studies, for which they will have to find the supporting material.
Prerequisites / Assumed knowledge
The student will be required to know the basic elements of technical drawing, since every fabrication process finds its starting point in the drawing of the component to manufacture.
Further, some knowledge about the main engineering materials and their basic behavior, in order to be able to prepare correctly the fabrication cycles, evaluating the effects of the material behavior on the process and on its output variables.
Some elements of technical drawing and mechanical behavior of materials will be in any case given at the beginning of the class.

Delivery modes
The course is organized in a series of lectures (42 h), and exercises in class (16.5 h).
Further, a visit to a technological lab will be organized, lasting 1.5 h, for which the students will be divided in two groups.
Texts, readings, handouts and other learning resources
The textbook is:
Kalpakjian Serope; Schmid Steven R., Tecnologia Meccanica, Hoepli Editore
Further, the students will be handed the slides projected during the lectures and numerical exercises.
Assessment and grading criteria
The exam is exclusively written.
A number of questions, open, with multiple response or true/false type constitutes the exam text.
Further, the solution of one or two numerical exercises similar to those solved in class will be required.
