Subject fundamentals
With this subject the students improve their knowledge on the materials used in Mechanical Industries. The properties of sintered materials, stainless steels, titanium alloys, light and heavy alloys (Mg, Al and Cu), tool steels, deep drawing steels.
Expected learning outcomes
The concepts on corrosion and corrosion resistance are introduced as well as the properties and technologies of surface coating, an introduction to less common engineering materials and an in deep knowledge on more traditional materials.
The students have to acquire the ability to understand and know the problem concerning the engineering materials choose, together with making judgements.
Prerequisites / Assumed knowledge
Knowledge of the subjects of the Degree in Mechanical Engineering.
Powder metallurgy technology. Powders (types and properties), compacting pressing (materials classes, types of dies, methods), sintering (furnaces, atmospheres, operating conditions, mechanism) post-treatments, products.
Corrosion. Anodic and cathodic behaviour. Oxygen, temperature, concentration influence. Galvanic corrosion coupling different materials or in case of different phases. Active and passive behaviour of stainless steels. The different types of corrosion. Protection methods of metallic materials.
Stainless steels. Schaeffler and De Long diagram. Stainless steels classes and designation. Heat treatment, welding, deformability and tool work-ability. Surface finishing. Sanification. Metallic ions release.
Tool steels. Cold and hot working classes. Heat treatments and tempering parameter. High speed steels.
Deep drawing steels for "Body in White" car components.
Surface coating technologies and materials.
Titanium alloys. Grades, alloying elements, phase diagrams, properties, heat treatments, influence of microstructure. Applications and products.
Delivery modes
Numerical practice in teams on several subject of the course.
Laboratory of metallurgy, optical and electronic microscopy, x-Ray diffractometric analyses, chemical analyses with small groups of students.
Texts, readings, handouts and other learning resources
- Lecture notes of the course.
- In the library of the Material Science and Chemical Engineering Dept.
- ASM Metals Handbook X Ed.
Assessment and grading criteria
During the practice in teams, the professor helps in the development of the exercise and verifies the level of the learning of the students.
The exam is written and oral.
The final mark is assigned considering the score obtained in the written test and the level of learning of the course.
