Subject fundamentals
The course aims to provide students with the knowledge and tools necessary to properly manage the environmental aspects (emissions to air, discharge to water, waste, energy and water consumption, etc.) related to the construction and operational management of companies, both in terms of correct implementation of the authorization procedures (EIA, IEA, etc..) and of proper management of environmental compliance.
The course also provides the information needed to design, implement and verify, in the view of environmental performances continuous improvement, an Environmental Management System in companies according to ISO 14001 and EMAS regulations requirements (environmental certification and registration), and on its possible integration with management systems for safety, quality and energy (BS OHSAS 18001, ISO 9001, EN 16001).
Finally, the eco-labeling of products and services (EU Ecolabel) and the greenhouse gases emissions reporting and reduction schemes (Kyoto Protocol, Emissions Trading Scheme and flexible mechanisms; voluntary instruments: GHG Protocol, ISO 14064) are presented.
Expected learning outcomes
Knowledge of the main requirements in the environmental compliance evaluation of companies (new and existing ones)
Knowledge and application of the requirements for the implementation of an Environmental Management System in a company
Ability to identify environmental aspects related to activities/products/services
Ability to critically examine documents aimed at the environmental communication to the public
Knowledge of voluntary instruments of eco-management and eco-labeling
Knowledge and application of tools for reporting and reducing greenhouse gases emissions
Prerequisites / Assumed knowledge
Basic elements of environmental sanitary engineering (definitions and techniques for the treatment of emissions, wastewater, waste) and hydraulics (water supply).
The concept of eco-management and sustainable development.
The main environmental legal requirements of companies: construction of new plants (EIA, IPPC, other permits/authorizations) and management of legal compliance (waste, emissions, wastewater, water and energy consumption, etc.).
Definition of Environmental Management System (EMS); reference standards: ISO 14001 and EMAS Regulation.
Implementing an EMS: Environmental Policy, Environmental Review, Environmental Objectives and Program, Environmental Management System, Environmental Audit, Environmental Statement.
The integrated management systems environment, safety, quality, energy (BS OHSAS 18001, ISO 9001, EN 16001).

Delivery modes
Two class exercises: critical analysis of the environmental indicators in an Environmental Statement of an EMAS registered company; reporting of greenhouse gases emissions in a case study.

The slides presented during the lectures are the main reference material. Guidance for consultation of further reference material and websites is provided during the lectures.
Assessment and grading criteria
Written exam with possible oral integration.
The upload of exercises reports is a mandatory element for recording the vote.
