Subject fundamentals
The course is taught in English.

The course covers the basic principles of radio planning, applied in traditional (radio broadcasting and broadcasting), modern (mobile, wireless networking), specific (underwater navigation) and last generation (wireless sensors networks) contexts. The basic techniques for radio networking design, are studied and applied by means of analytical and numerical algorithms. Moreover, the main data storage techniques for cartographic and electromagnetic filing, are introduced. The techniques for the measurement and characterization of the electromagnetic field generated by a radio network are analyzed in detail. Electromagnetic compatibility applied to radio systems is introduced. In particular, the course examines the immunity and susceptibility to radiated electromagnetic fields, the shielding techniques, the algorithms to calculate the field radiated as disturbance. Finally, human exposure to radio transmitting systems is analyzed and discussed, from the regulatory, biomedical and electromagnetic points of view.
Expected learning outcomes
The student learns how to:
1) critically analyze design specifications for the setup of a radiofrequency network, compared to operating conditions and application constraints
2) build up and/or use cartographic data base systems
3) build up and/or use electromagnetic data base systems
4) configure a transmission system to provide a radio service satisfying project specifications
5) verify through simulations and measurements the performance of a radio electric network
6) analyze the electromagnetic compatibility problem within a system
7) design a radio system, taking into account the main radiated EMC specifications
8) verify the compatibility of radio systems towards design specifications to protect human exposure to electromagnetic field
9) critically compare results obtained by use of algorithms and/or measurements for the prediction of electromagnetic field propagation
The ability to apply the gained knowledge will be verified through lab exercises.
