Subject fundamentals
The main objective of the course is to provide students with the technical and cultural tools as well as the rules and the methods necessary for the understanding and the representation of territorial and urban spaces, by setting the geometric foundations of the different graphical techniques at progressive levels of depth.
Various techniques for the representation of architecture, city, territory and landscape will be tested in order to provide the scientific foundations of drawing, considered not only as a means to represent what surrounds us, but also as a communication system, an irreplaceable tool of comprehension of reality and an aid to educate to the spatial vision of the built environment at various scales and to its metric control.
The activity of the course, that examines the representation codes and their uses, their control and their aware application, will focus on the provision of the knowledge necessary for the representation of space in its formal and geometric components.
It supplies basic knowledge and skills and therefore it is held in the first year.
Expected learning outcomes
Critical ability to select and to use the most convenient representation techniques in the professional praxes of the urban, environmental, and territorial planning.
The course aims to offer a didactic path that introduces the various technical expressions of the representation, in great part deriving from the drawing language, in particular with regard to the use of computer science based instrumentations and technologies for the management of the technical documentation. The disciplinary contents are chosen with specific reference to the requirements for the formation of planners operating in urban, environmental, and territorial fields in relation to the didactic curriculum of the educational areas and with reference to the inherent professional praxes. The elaborates produced during graphical practice and in laboratory, corrected with periodic cadence, are the instruments that allows the estimation of acquired degree of knowledge of the students with respect to the course arguments.
Prerequisites / Assumed knowledge
For computer science and geometric arguments, the usual competences acquired at school and the competences and abilities from contemporaneous undergraduate courses are considered as a propaedeutical to the Drawing Course.
Contents
Technical information and representation: role of drawing, the graphical techniques, and the computer science elaborations in the management and planning, historical outline on the praxes and the recent developments, traditional and innovative techniques for the treatment of the data and the elaboration of the technical documentation.

Specialistic languages of representation: the technical drawing and the treatment of the geometric data, from the three dimensions space to the representation on a plan, orthogonal projections and sections, national and international codes, unified technical writing, axonometric methods for synthetic views, control and transcription of the dimensional values according to unified systems, scale factors of representation.

Analysis of the role of the representation for the knowledge and the management of the city and the territory: review of the base documentations and some themes useful to the management of the interested systems (as an example: cartographies to the various scales, analysis of the geometric structuring of the territory seen in relation to the climatic and morphologic factors, analysis of infrastructuring territorial works, civil works and buildings, analysis of representation in the various levels of the planning).

The digital technologies for the treatment of the information as representative integrations: historical organization, development and perspectives. Elaborations for survey and planning: the computer assisted drawing and design, operating working hypotheses and potentialities, the role of the computer science for the representation: information and communication:
- employment of a standard package for the planning: the AutoCadŽ program, application of the main commands, the basic syntaxes for 2D and 3D elaborations;
- employment of elaborations for the three-dimensional model;
- Analyses of the potentialities of some programs for integrated managements of multirelational data banks and for data of various format (outline).

Delivery modes
During practical lectures students are required to produce graphical elaborations, that are practical applications of the concepts exposed during the lessons and contribute to a constant verification of the acquired abilities.The activity is integrated through the use of programs and applications, necessary for the treatment of alphanumeric, vectorial, and raster data.
Texts, readings, handouts and other learning resources
Bibliographical references are given during each didactic activity, in relation to the faced topics. A series of handouts constitutes the reference model and the documentation for the development of the practices. Such lecture notes are integrated by examples of elaborations done by the students of the previous years. Computer science lecture notes on specific arguments are available on the web, as an anthology under construction.
Assessment and grading criteria
The examination tests are constituted by an assessment test, by the presentation of an elaboration of synthesis on an agreed topic, testimony of the happened formation (thought like critical ability to select the most useful representation techniques) and from an oral talk on specialistic languages of representation. During the assessment test (2,5h.), students are required to produce a graphical elaboration that is practical application of technical expressions of the drawing. In the final judgment account it will be taken into account the elaboration of sintesis (1/3), the critic ability to select and to use the most convenient representation techniques (1/3) and the intermediate evaluations of the elaborates produced during the course, concurrent to the certification of the frequency (1/3).
