Subject fundamentals
This multidisciplinary laboratory regards design experimentation through digital communication tools: the design course leads to the realization of digital communication products obtained with virtual and real content. The laboratory leads to a single exam. It lasts for six months, and is held in the 2nd semester, but it can be attended indifferently in the 1st or 2nd year.
Expected learning outcomes
At the end of the course, the students will have:
- ability to engage with systemic design sensibility knowledge, cultures and techniques related to the complex world of technology of 3dimensional modeling (from the worlds of art and photography to those of the computer network);
- ability to start up and develop analysis of a complex communicative scenario in merit of a specific theme
- ability to manage the technologies already in possession and transform them into complex experiences through new levels of integration
- ability to define a path within multimedia design in which real images, digital rendering and video and audio flows integrate with the final aim of narrating, communication and transmitting to others
- ability to create multiplatform work flows to which a variety of designers can gain access
- ability to generate new ways to design creative contents through participated design and sharing that is typical of the strategic approach of Open Content.
Prerequisites / Assumed knowledge
Technical knowledge established in the field of digital content production such as two- and three-dimensional graphics and in the traditional techniques of representation and graphic communication.
The laboratory is interdisciplinary. The disciplinary contributions are:
Starting with the themes that will be defined as the course progresses, paying attention to technological innovation in relation to the territorial facilities and the relations subtended by these, this course provides theoretical lessons on design methodology, accompanies the students in analyzing the design scenario and defining the project guidelines, ending with the practical creation of the initial briefing, the guidelines and the specific themes. It defines the criteria for creating the technological structure of support to the final production. The student will acquire all the skills listed in the chapter EXPECTED LEARNING RESULTS, as well as:
- ability to work in multicultural teams
- ability to identify the multidisciplinary relations typical to the expected work flow
- ability to elaborate a project of a digital communication content
- ability to technically produce an elaborate digital content starting with live recordings, computer contents, graphics and audio
- ability to present and distributed the produced material online

The course provides specific photography skills for static images and video clips, with the relative cultural and process support and the preparation on fundamental elements such as: History and photographic technique, shot, light, color, effects and management of the subject/object recorded.
At the end of the course, the student will be proficient in the widest range of lighting and color situations that he may find in daily photography.
He will also know how to manage lights, color temperatures, diaphragms, times, focal distances, heights and distances of recording, both in real photographic shots and virtual ones obtained through special 3D modelling apps. In particular, the student will acquire:
- the ability to recognise and know how to use various types of photographic apparatus.
- the ability to recognise the main photographic procedures (both historically and currently)
- the ability to recognise and know how to use all perspective types: from the academic rectilinear to the spherical.
- the ability to use measurement apparatus external to the camera: Exposure meter and Thermocolour meter.
- the ability to resolve a complex problem using photographic language creatively and expertly.
- the ability to set up a real and virtual photographic set
- the ability to correctly manage the lights in a real or virtual set.

VIRTUAL SET (6 CFU, 60 hours)
This module aims to present production techniques and methods in the production of digital communications contents. Starting from techniques for modelling scenes, we face the problems regarding the positioning of lights, camera movements, character animation, rendering and codification algorithms of the films. The skills acquired are both theoretical and practical, as the theoretical subjects are complemented by laboratory exercises, aimed at the realization of a communication project with the use of software tools for modeling, animation, rendering and interactive presentation.
In particular, the student will acquire:
- Knowledge of software related to the processing and manufacturing in the areas of image management, video content, production in computer animation
- Knowledge of the main techniques of production of interactive content
- Ability to identify, develop and use alternative instruments, integrating them in innovative ways within the digital communication products.
- Ability to develop elaborate digital making use of Open Source tools and alternative approaches to traditional production.
- Ability to choose methods and platforms where to submit the materials related with the communication goals of the project
Delivery modes
The Laboratory activity is aimed at creating a digital product whose content is born from a specific theme identified by the reference teacher. On this theme, the students will develop the design by analyzing the scenario and identifying guidelines of the specific communication. Subsequently, we will identify and use those computer techniques that are most useful for true creation. The students will undertake the activity in groups.

Assessment and grading criteria
Regular attendance is required, also for the final grade that will be given in a single exam mark. The activities carried out will undergo intermediary evaluations, both mono-disciplinary and in seminars covering all subjects. Said intermediary evaluations will go towards the final grade, based on the presentation and discussion of final examination papers (written and graphic). Laboratory activities are carried out by students in groups, but each student will be given an individual result (expressed with a single grade), which will take into consideration the intermediary mono-disciplinary and seminar evaluations (written, oral, graphic), the evaluation of the presentation and discussion of the final examination papers and individual participation in the task and the group presentation.
