Principi fondamentali della conversione dell'energia solare, introduzione alla fisica dei dispositivi fotovoltaici, analisi dettagliata delle celle a giunzione pn, materiali per celle solari, sistemi fotovoltaici di potenza.
Programma
This intensive course covers both the science and engineering of
solar energy conversion. It is relevant to students and faculty
in several PhD programs: Electronic Devices, Electronics and
Communications Engineering, Physics, Materials Science and
Technology, and possibly Energetics. This course is offered in
English. The ten-hour course has five modules that are outlined
below. The outline is followed by a brief biography of the
orator.

1 - Fundamentals of solar energy conversion (2 hours)
o Generalization of thermodynamic converter
o Limitations of relevant thermodynamic engines
o Introduction to ideal Shockley-Queisser p-n junction solar cell
o Calculation of flux with incomplete Riemann zeta integrals

2 - Basics of device physics (2 hours)
o Absorption of light
o Recombination of electron-hole pairs
o Equations of semiconductor device physics

3 - p-n junction diodes (2 hours)
o Electrostatics
o Dark characteristics
o Illuminated characteristics

4 - Solar energy materials and solar cells (2 hours)
o Silicon solar cells
o Tandem solar cells
o Multiple-exciton solar cells
o Intermediate-band solar cells
- Review of prototype intermediate-band solar cells

5 - Power Systems (2 hours)
o Stand-alone systems
o Residential systems
o Centralized systems
- Non-concentrating systems
- Concentrating systems
