Subject fundamentals
The course mission is to provide the fundamental knowledge concerning momentum, mass and energy trasport phenomena and the main chemical and physical separation methods.
Expected learning outcomes
Expected competences are:
- Mass, momentum and energy conservation laws, macroscopic and differential balance equations.
- Momentum transport: fluid statics and fluid dynamics.
- Heat transfer by conduction, convection and radiation.
- Mass transfer: molecular and turbolent diffusion .
- Analogy between the transport phenomena, heat and mass transfer coefficients, friction factors.
- Main physical-chemical separation processes used in the process industry.
- The concept of equilibrium stage and stage efficiency.
- Main stage apparatus.
- Graphical and numerical resolution methods to evaluate the stage number and simplifying hypotheses of the mathematical models and their application limits.
Expected skills:
- Phenomenological and analitycal analysis of transport phenomena by global and local balance equations.
- Evaluation of momentum, heat and mass transfer kinetics in ideal systems.
- To make material and energy balances of a single stage and multi-stage apparatus.
- To perform the freedom degree analysis of a separation multi-stage apparatus, to evaluate whether the problem is underspecified and in this case to saturate the degrees of freedom with suitable specifications.
- To make the calculus of the number of equilibrium and real stages of the main stage separation apparatus used in the process industry.
- To make the calculus of the packed column height necessary to obtain a specify separation.
Prerequisites / Assumed knowledge
Basic integral and differential calculus.
