Subject fundamentals
The course can belong, in addition to the chemical engineering profile, also of the civil and energy engineering ones.
It describes the main physical, chemical and biological operations that can be used to treat air pollutants, wastewaters, and liquid and solid wastes; the programme is divided in three parts, that present processes, technologies and plants used to reduce or destroy the pollution, taking into account, when possible, the energy recovery.
The plant and process aspects are discussed taking into account both the selection criteria among the possible solutions and the Italian legislation.
Expected learning outcomes
The student must acquire the fundamental knowledge tought during the course in order to be able to enhance the choice criteria among the possibilities of treatments, taking into account also the legislative framework and the economical aspects of the treatments themselves.
In addition, after the course the student will have learnt the technical language proper of the environmental engineering.
Prerequisites / Assumed knowledge
The required knowledge is that contained in the university programmes of general chemistry, physics, fluid mechanics.
Contents
PHYSICAL OPERATIONS (20 hours)
Legislation for wastewaters. Hydraulic load rate, main wastewaters pollutants, separated and combined sewers.
Wastewaters pretreatments and primary treatments.
Legislation for air pollution.
Separations using gravity, centrifuge force, filtration. Electrostatic separators.
Liquid or gas treatments using adsorption.
Absorption of gas compounds.

CHEMICAL OPERATIONS(15 hours)
Chemical treatments for wastewaters.
Combustion of volatile organic compounds in gas flows.
Chemico-physical characteristics of the wastes.
Legislation for incineration. Incineration of municipal solid wastes and industrial wastes.
Notes about gasification and pyrolysis of solid wastes.

BIOLOGICAL OPERATIONS (25 hours)
Biological treatments: operation parameters, process products.
Composting process.
Wastewaters secondary treatments. Suspended-growth and attached-growth biomass. Nitrification and denitrification.
Anaerobic digesters for sludges and solid wastes.
Sludge treatments: thickening, biological stabilization, dehydration.
Sanitary landfills. Legislation for landfills.
Landfill leachate: generation, characteristics, collection, treatment.
Landfill biogas: generation, characteristics. Collection wells, transport lines, combustion plants, energy recovery. Evaluation of generated biogas quantity.
Delivery modes
Calculation exercises, solved by the students in classroom, about:
- sedimentation and settling tanks
- activated carbon treatment plants
- combustion of volatile organics in gaseous emissions
- solid wastes incineration
- composting
- activated sludge treatment plants
- anaerobic digesters.
Texts, readings, handouts and other learning resources
No reference books are used nor notes are given to the students. The schemes and diagrams used during the lessons can be downloaded from the course web page. The calculation exercises need the scientific computer.
Assessment and grading criteria
The learning is verified by an oral examination. During the lessons, dialog with students is foreseen to solve questions and doubts.
