Subject fundamentals
The course aims to provide mainly tools and knowledge to understand historic characteristics and techniques related to existing buildings and their relations with urban and territorial context.
All these knowledges are basic prerequisites to prepare students to architectonic and engineering design, also dedicated to refurbish of existing buildings.
Expected learning outcomes
To understand the connection between technological, structural and architectonic characteristics of any singular buildings, and their relationships with historical period of construction.
To develop a critical understanding about the architectural and technological specificity of ancient and modern buildings aimed to preservation and restoration design.
Be able to apply architectural survey and analytical tools and knowledge to understanding historic documents and buildings.
Prerequisites / Assumed knowledge
Assumed knowledges are:
Basics of drawing tecniques and architectural survey.
Basics of knowledge of architectural, structural and historic buildings elements.
The course is divided in lessons and practices (60 hours in total), also with educational visit to some buildings case studies. A block of lessons are focused on important examples of historic buildings for each period analized.
These blocks of lessons, in accordance with the main architecture historic periods treat:
- Ancient and medieval architecture, geometric module, architectural orders, ribbed domes, romanic and gotic characteristics;
- Renaissance architecture; rediscovering of Classicism and architectonic orders, religious architecture, civil construction and buildings, fortifications;
- Baroque period and Manierism, scenography, dynamism and plasticity of facades of buildings, techniques of constructions;
- Neoclassicism, simplicity and rationalism, the new construction science;
- Eclecticism and Art Nouveau, renewal of architectonic language, new materials and techniques
- Modern Movement architecture (deco style and rationalism), architectural avant-garde and sperimentalism of contemporary time.
- Insights on specific themes of historic building techniques and materials
Delivery modes
Exercise consist in graphics development of historic and technological analysis about case study building.
Texts, readings, handouts and other learning resources
Texts on blocks lessons are made available to students through the portal of educational on line. For each topics are indicated specific and updated bibliography.
Assessment and grading criteria
The exam measures the expected learning outcomes and it is structured in two main time: first is the evaluation of the exercise; second is an oral or written test on some topics covered during the lessons. The final grade in a weighted average rating.
