Subject fundamentals
The course should be seen as the completion of the first year Chemistry one that provides "the roots of technology" This course intends to present chemistry as real experimental science. Some of the subjects discussed in the chemistry course are deepened without increasing the number of chemical concepts. the experiments should be essential in the understanding of the subjects presented during the lessons.
This course is therefore open to all first-year students the aim is that of presenting some of the themes developed in the chemistry and physics courses from the practical laboratory experience viewpoint. In particular, it targets students of the Chemistry and Food, Environment and Territory, materials engineering programs, but also Energy, Mechanical, Aerospace Engineering.
The basis of this course is constituted by a of laboratory experiments . In general they are organized to forward quantitative results confirming a certain theory or demonstrating the correctness of an experimental law. That is why part of the lesson hours are dedicated to link the concepts explained to the process of the experiments. Even so the number of hours dedicated to experimentation is the 40% of the hours at disposal.
Expected learning outcomes
The student at the end of the course will:
increase his knowledge of the main basic concepts of chemistry through their direct practical application.
make experimental laboratory experiences not passively witnessing the unfolding of a qualitative experiment but personally programming and controlling an experiment as a source of quantitative information to be elaborated and discussed in the light of the theory.
make experience in the management of experimental data taking into account the error sources from the laboratory practice and by instrument itself
Prerequisites / Assumed knowledge
The student needs to possess the concepts teached in the Chemistry course for engineering
Contents

The subjects developed during the lessons and related to experiments are:
Chemical kinetics
Chemical thermodynamics
Characterization of electrochemical systems
Analytical chemistry techniques for the quantitative and qualitative determination
Thermodynamic phenomena at the basis of distillation
Two more subjects are treated not directly related to experiments:
Coordination compounds
Basics of theoretical chemistry
Since all topics have been already seen in the Chemistry class, the order of teaching is ruled by the organization of the experiments in the laboratory.

REDOX and acid base titration to determine the title of solutions of unknown concentration
experimental verification of the electrode potential electrochemical series
validation of the Le Chatelier - Brown principle
determination of the chemical reaction order for the saponification reaction of ethilacetate with NaOH
distillation of two liquids mixture
Definition of the voltammetric characteristic of a PEM fuel cell
synthesis of copper sulphate
Water electrolysis with the production of hydrogen and oxygen
Determination of water hardness
analysis of an alkaline metal carbonate to determine the kind of alkaline metal present

No specific text for the course. The slides used by the teachers will be made available.
Assessment and grading criteria
The exam consists of an oral test to verify if the student is able to:
thoroughly describe his preparing and carrying out e certain experiment
illustrate the obtained results
discuss them on the basis of the aobjective of the experiment.
Since the verification of the achievement of the expected learning outcomes includes the discussion of experimental activities and assessment of the reports on the work carried out by the student, the laboratory diary written by every student and reporting his findings is of fundamental importance. Is also mandatory the student has to take part to the experimental sessions.
