Subject fundamentals
The present course is a sort of completion of the first chemistry course. No new chemical concepts are forwarded, but some of those that the students have learned before are discussed more thoroughly both theoretically and by means of experimentation in laboratory. For this reason almost half of the time scheduled for this course is spent in the lab carrying out experiments which lead to quantitative results. The experiments procedures must be described and the results presented and discussed in the light of the theory described during the lessons in a personal laboratory book written by every student. This will constitute the basis of the oral examination.
Expected learning outcomes
Following this course the students will:
acquire a thorough knowledge of the basic chemical concepts by applying them experimentally
improve their laboratory practice as the experiments will be carried out by the students themselves.
make some experience on getting experimental data and treat them according to the error theory
Being the results quantitative, the students will be asked to describe and discuss the obtained results improving their analysis capability, chemical theory understanding and report writing
Prerequisites / Assumed knowledge
The chemical concepts learned during the first chemistry course are all essential so it is required that this exam is passed.
Contents
The subjects considered are:
Chemical kinetics
Thermodynamics of the chemical equilibrium
Water solution equilibria
Electrochemistry
Preparation of some chemical compound
Separation techniques
For every subject, to a first theoretical lesson the development of an experiment in the lab will follow.
Delivery modes
1. Redox and acid-base titration
2. Order of reaction determination for the ethyl acetate hydrolysis
3. Verification of the Le Chatelier Brown principle
4. Redox reactions and the electrochemical series of the electrode potentials
5. Determination of the characteristic curve of a PEMFC
6. Experimental determination of water hardness
7. Preparation of copper sulfate
8. Qualitative determination of the kind of alcaline metal in a carbonate salt
9. Separation by the distillation technique
10. Water electrolysis
Texts, readings, handouts and other learning resources
There is no ad hoc textbook, The slides of the lessons and the description of the experiments are loaded in the course portal.
Assessment and grading criteria
The test consists in an oral examination regarding experiments and the theory exposed during the course.
