Subject fundamentals
Technologies, starting from information and communication technologies (ICT) and mechanical and biomedical ones, now pervade every aspect of life and for people with disabilities their use can be the only way to avoid their 'exclusion' from the social life.
The course aims raise awareness in the students about the vital role that technologies made when facing problems related to aging or disability conditions, the contribution they can make to overcome difficulties, and the need and duty to a design that always considers the needs of these groups.
Expected learning outcomes
The course will keep a dual point of view: information and education.
The "information" component will aim to introduce students to the specific issue of disability, framed in the broader context of education to diversity. The student will therefore acquire awareness on specific issues related to the various types of disabilities (including those in temporary and / or age-related), and will be sensitized to the need for technological solutions that take into account the different needs.
The "educational" value will be developed in the engineering sense, first explaining the basic principles of universal design, and then some specific technology trends in which we will analyze the design techniques adopted, as well as associated test methodologies. The student will be trained to recognize, in every act of creation or design, the universal nature of his engineering work, and this mindset can be developed fully in the future studies, when each student will deal with more technical topics.
