Subject fundamentals
In the context of development advocated by economists, characterized by a continuous increase in GDP, engineers have to cope with the implementation of all the technologies that lead to reduced consumption of raw materials and energy. In fact, this is the only approach compatible with an increase in productivity, without further damages to the environment. The course aims to give broad information on theoretical and practical aspects of materials recycling.
Expected learning outcomes
The course will provide to the students the knowledge about the key technologies of recycling, with particular regard to metallic materials. Students will also acquire the basic skills needed to carry out an LCA analysis.
Prerequisites / Assumed knowledge
For the understanding of the issues addressed in the course, a prior specific knowledge is not necessary.
Contents

THEORY OF RECYCLING:
Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) as a tool for the evaluation of environmental impacts.
Definition of functional unit.
Inventory and allocation models
Main impact indicators
The ecological footprints
Closed recycling and open recycling
The minimization of environmental impact
The metallurgical technologies involved in recycling and their environmental impact assessment
The recycling of scraps, new or at the end of life
The production of steel in electric furnace
The production of pig iron in the cupola furnace
The production of secondary aluminum alloys
The production of secondary copper alloys
NOTES ON OTHER RECYCLED MATERIALS:

Practical use of models to perform an LCA analysis.
Texts, readings, handouts and other learning resources
Given the extent of topics covered, it is not possible to provide students with a unique reference text. During the course, books, articles and other literature sources will be suggested to deepen the issues addressed.

Assessment and grading criteria
The final exam will consist of a written test, on LCA, and in an oral test, regarding the technological processes of recycling.
