Subject fundamentals
Aim of the course is to define, develop and analyze the notion of coherence in wave phenomena (with emphasis on electromagnetic waves and on quantum matter waves), putting in evidence its interest in a number of applications in the Information Engineering area. The various issues will be addressed making use of a heuristic approach in order to allow students enrolled in different bachelor information engineering courses to easily follow the lectures.
Expected learning outcomes
- Knowledge of coherent optics and of laser-source working principles on physical grounds.
- Ability to understand and use optical and microelectronic devices based upon the principles of optical and electronic coherence.
Prerequisites / Assumed knowledge
- Elementary Mathematics and Physics (standard university-level mathematical tools; electromagnetism; waves)
- Elementary chemistry (atomic levels and electronic transitions)
Contents
1) Electromagnetic waves: an overview (0,5 ECTS)
2) A Heuristic approach to wave mechanics (1 ECTS)
