Subject fundamentals
The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), a United Nations specialized Agency, is the supreme authority for World civil aviation. ICAO works to achieve its vision of safe, secure and sustainable (economic) development of civil aviation through cooperation amongst its member States by universally accepted standards incorporated in the aviation legislation.
This course deals with an harmonic introduction of the economics/financials performances evaluation criteria for companies and air transport carriers, the role of safety and human factors in the company engineering activities and, finally, the European legislation structure concerning the aircraft operations and maintenance.
Expected learning outcomes
The course's objective is to let the students gain the following knowledge, hereafter described in more details for each of the three main subjects.
1) In general:
- Competencies are connected with being able to consider economic/financial issues on initiatives and management choices.
More specifically:
- being able to envisage effects on company financial statements
- being able to utilize different industrial accounting system in defining effects on product/services costs and values
- being able to set up product or process innovation initiatives considering life cycle period
2) The main cultural background that students have to acquire in the framework of safety for aerospace activities is:
- knowledge of the aviation authorities existing in Italy, Europe and worldwide;
- knowledge of the main standards and regulations existing for safety in airport activities (airport construction, managing and operation, ramp safety, bird-strike, fire fighting and rescue);
- awareness of the major initiatives and methods adopted to ensure safety in aviation activities (physical characteristics of airports, airport signage, services and airspace, flight safety and aircraft accident prevention, aircraft on-board emergency systems);
- knowledge of the influence of human factors on the safety of aeronautical activities.
3) The student's acquired knowledge about the EASA aviation legislation should be mainly focused on the continuing airworthiness of aircraft and aeronautical products, parts and appliances, and on the approval of organizations and personnel involved in these tasks.
More specifically:
- being able to describe the recent EASA regulations structure, with special reference to the aircraft maintenance in the field of the civil aviation;
- being able to outline the main requirements of the EASA regulations to be accomplished for the correct organization of the aviation maintenance, with particular reference to the training of the maintenance staff;
- being able to underline the possible weak points of the organization of an air carrier, or of an aviation maintenance company, allowing for growth and improved flight safety.
- Being able to identify the causes of the aviation incidents, manifesting awareness about the critical influence of the human factors on the maintenance activities, in relation to the occurrence of the above said incidents, and about the most frequent error types and how they can be avoided.

No previous skills are required.
