Subject fundamentals
Horizon 2020 is the most important European research and innovation program which, for the next seven years, will open a "horizon" of financing of almost 80 billion Euros (from 2014-2020). This financial instrument, among others, will promote initiatives and opportunities towards a new vision of process engineering, while encouraging innovative solutions in all the high-added value sectors and attempting to make communication easier between universities, public organizations, large companies, PMI, start-ups and research centers of excellence, all of which are realities in which the engineer of the future will need to work.
The course will supply the necessary technical knowledge as well as the economic and environmental impact criteria that will make it possible for these engineers to outline alternatives processes for the regenerating treatment of effluents, rejects or by-products and waste, paying particular attention to their energetic and material valorization. The course will offer a "horizon" in terms of integrated approach, and the capacity to reason, no longer in terms of single process for a single output, but with a synergetic approach that will involve the entire production site or the local industrial reality in order to maximize the input resources and reduce the quantity of waste exiting from the production site.
Coordinating the waste cycle means managing the environment, the economy and the territory together from a collective and social awareness point of view.
Expected learning outcomes
The objective of the course is to make the student acquire the following abilities:
To be able to identify possible scenarios in order to MINIMIZE THE GENERATION OF REJECTS AND WASTE, working on both the optimization of processes and on recuperation/recycling strategies in industrial and civil contexts, thus reducing resort to waste disposal sites to a minimum;
To be able to identify the best technologies and SOLUTIONS FOR THE VALORIZATION of rejects and by-products, while evaluating the economic and environmental feasibility and sustainability aspects;
To be able to use technologies and processes for the RECOVERY OF MATERIAL from waste in order to produce high-added value molecular products;
To be able to identify, evaluate and compare the different technologies available for the ENERGETIC VALORIZATION of waste, rejects and by-products;
To be able to read a financial program and write an innovative PROJECT PROPOSAL in order to obtain public funding.
Sustainable development. The use of resources, the choice of raw materials. Energetic strategies: International and national panorama; prospects.

Recycling and re-use of reject material. Material recovery processes in civil contexts (recycling sewage/grey water). The waste cycle: Integrated management of Solid Urban Refuse. Technologies and processes for the recovery of industrial waste or by-product material (paper, glass, plastic, wood, aluminum, steel etc.). High-added value molecular extraction processes. The organic fraction of waste. Anaerobic digestion and composting.

Raw materials for chemical products and energy. Widespread products and processes: paper, plastic, wood, food, glass and metals. The role of petroleum and the energetic and chemical costs. Macroscopic evaluations of materials and energy in the most common production scenarios. Non-renewable fuels and fossil sources: brief mention of the production, costs and prospects of development. Alternative fuels and renewable sources.

Energy technologies and processes for renewable resources. Recovery of the energetic content of solid waste or rejects (secondary solid fuels, lignocellulose and/or oleaginous biomass, energy crops).Thermochemical processes for the exploitation of waste biomass (wood manufacturing, the food industry, agriculture).

Practical lessons:
The students will be taught the best way to write a project proposal. In order to draw up a high quality level proposal in an effective way, it is not sufficient to just write a good proposal, it is also necessary to know the relative evaluation criteria, starting from the scientific excellence and considering the repercussions of the project. The students will be divided into small groups and will be given continuous assistance by the teaching staff.

Assessment and grading criteria
The final exam will consist of:
An oral interrogation on the program in order to evaluate the knowledge and comprehension of the subject, in other words, on the acquisition of the expected expertise and the capacity to apply the acquired knowledge. In particular, the students could be asked to describe the processes dealt with during the lessons, make a critical analysis and/or evaluate the different process and plant alternatives. Maximum mark = 24.
A facultative evaluation of the group developed project which should be handed in before the end of the course and which will be developed during the practical lessons throughout the semester. Maximum mark = 6.
